Description

Alice Steedman has practiced in the architectural specialty of heritage and conservation of buildings in Western Australia since 1994. She has operated her own practice since 1997, providing advice directly to clients or as a sub-consultant to other professional practices.

She has completed numerous heritage assessments and conservation management plans and worked on conservation and redevelopment projects in regional, suburban and city locations.

In 1994/5, Alice was involved in the completion of the Conservation Management Plan for Central Government Precinct including the Perth Town Hall, Central Government Offices, Land Titles Office, St George’s Cathedral, Deanery and Public Trustee Building and the former Playhouse Theatre, R&I Bank and Law Chambers.

From 2009 to 2014, Alice consulted on the one40william development for Cbus Properties on behalf of Lovell Chen Architects and Heritage Consultants in Melbourne. The role initially entailed documentation and site supervision during both external and internal conservation works programs but has extended to ongoing advice for incoming tenants, maintenance and minor works and ongoing Heritage Asset Management.

Alice previously worked for Heritage Council of Western Australia assessing development applications and has liaised with State Heritage Office and City of Perth on various development proposals. She was appointed to the Board of Heritage Council of Western Australia in 2015.

In 2012, Alice received the Heritage Council of Western Australia Awards for Conservation of a State Registered Place for Kalgoorlie Miner Building and a High Commendation for Excellence in Adaptive Re-use for Marr Mooditj Training, Clontarf. Both projects were completed in conjunction with Michael Ipkendanz Architect.

Alice has consulted in regard to various redevelopment proposals in city, metropolitan and regional locations. Alice seeks to obtain best heritage outcomes within the resources and objectives of the building owners. She looks strategically at heritage sites to present conservation and redevelopment options to achieve economic sustainability of the site whilst meeting heritage obligations and owner requirements.

Alice also specialises in the development of functional briefs for organisations wishing to determine their accommodation requirements and therefore develop budget estimates for new buildings. In this role, Alice has written funding applications and assessed the development potential of sites and buildings for numerous client both in heritage and non-heritage situations. Much of this work has been within the community sector and with Aboriginal organisations.

Alice is also a qualified Access Consultant and can assist in the provision of compliant disabled access in heritage buildings.

Alice has been a member of the jury for the Australian Institute of Architects Heritage Awards and is an active member of the Institute’s Heritage Committee.
